Our Story

KeLAC was founded by Edna Obare and Nick Ogutu in response to a growing demand for foreign language skills in Kenya, especially in Kisumu and surrounding regions. As Kenya increasingly sends skilled citizens abroad for work opportunities, language proficiency in languages like German, French, Chinese, Spanish, Arabic and English has become essential. Recognizing this trend and the role languages play in global job markets, Edna and Nick were convinced to create an institution dedicated to preparing Kenyans and the world as a whole for success on the international stage.
Nick Ogutu, with a background in international relations, had witnessed the immense benefits of multilingualism firsthand while studying abroad. He saw how speaking another language can broaden career prospects, foster connections, and deepen cultural understanding. Meanwhile, Edna, a seasoned language educator, recognized the gap in accessible, high-quality language training in Kenya. Together, they envisioned an institution that could empower the community with the skills needed to succeed in today’s global economy.
